About art therapy, the art therapy way
First and foremost, you dont need to know how to draw to participate in art therapy. Sometimes the less obvious the image, the more information it contains.
The first session in art therapy is essentially an information gathering session. You will be asked about what has brought you to the art therapy space. This can be done through talking or art making.
An assessment may be done through art which can assess your strengths, develop a deeper understanding of the presenting problem and formulate a direction for therapy.
The following sessions will include a combination of both art psychotherapy and talking therapy. An image can be completed in one session or may be brought back to the next session. There will always be time for grounding and processing, both before and after the art making.
All images will be kept by myself, the therapist, in a safe and secure environment in between sessions. This is to allow for some distance between you and the presenting problem
- in a metaphorical sense!
When therapy has ended, all images will be returned back to you. You will be given the option to keep the images or to shred them if that is what you wish to do.
All art therapy sessions are confidential. However, in situations where you disclose information which may be harmful to yourself or others, confidentially can be broken. This will be discussed further in the initial session.
Sometimes talking is not easy when we are struggling and at times words cannot grasp the full weight of our worries or get to the root of why we are feeling a certain way.
Art therapy provides a non-judgemental space that is safe to explore and reflect on what is happening within. The images created during the sessions are analysed by the clients themselves. The therapist places no judgement on these.
Expressing through art allows for a deeper, more comprehensive picture about what is happening for us. Through observing an image filled with symbolic and instinctive meaning, words, thoughts and emotions can begin to flow which in turn guides us on the path to feeling like ourselves again.
The art therapy way is based on the belief that all solutions to our struggles lie within. By using art as a form of therapy, one becomes equipped with another language to directly and holistically look at issues and find a quicker solution.
