Exercise: Think about any aspect of you which makes you who you are and create an image around this. What image or shape comes to mind? Can you draw it without placing judgment on what the image looks like? What feeling does the image evoke? If you had the opportunity to change the image, what would you do? If you made a change, what is the new image saying to you? What is the feeling after the change is made? What tittle would you put on the image? These are some simple questions which can be asked during an art therapy session and are effective in allowing someone to make sense of their thoughts. Here is my example.... Words that describe this image: Relaxation, letting worries go, a break away, calm, peacefulness, missing home. I feel nervous and anxious when I look at the clouds - it reminds me of all I have to worry about. Making a change would offer some relief and a change in perspective. Words that come to mind when looking at the new image: Soothing, strength and resilience of the wall, crumbling under pressure, black and white thinking (seeing the difference in both the images). Finding a grey area, taking both the calmness of the first image and the strength of the second image. What I gained from this image: Finding balance, being less hard on myself, a reminder to relax more on a daily basis instead of when I am just on holidays. Tittle of image: Balance.
